Mat sadly lost his life to epilepsy five years ago. Having been a keen runner and ‘always on the go’, Mat completed the Great North Run seven times. This year, his family and friends came together to run the famous course in his memory.
James, Charlotte, Chris, Matthew, Gemma, Emily, Tom and Richard all ran the 13.1 miles in aid of the Epilepsy Research Institute, to raise vital funds to help prevent others from suffering the grief of losing a loved one due to epilepsy. The team - a mix of experienced runners and complete newbies - collectively raised over £5,000, an incredible achievement!
Before the event, James, Mat’s brother said:
“Matthew Brown was my big brother - and way better at running than me. However, we both shared many runs over the years. He'd slow down for me so we could chat - before speeding off into the distance!
“That was before we lost him, far too early, back in 2019.
“Five years later, along with many more family members, I am running the Great North Run for the Epilepsy Research Institute. I've never run a half marathon before, so this will be a new challenge. As will getting to Newcastle from Copenhagen as there are no direct flights - so let's just call this a full marathon.
“Losing Mat had a devastating effect on the whole family. Please support us so we can honour the memory of a beloved father, son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend.”
