Announcing theme leads for Enabling Technologies and Reproduction & Hormones research programmes

The Epilepsy Research Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of the theme leads who will drive the Institute’s research strategy for our Enabling Technologies and Reproduction & Hormones programmes.

The Institute’s six key research and cross cutting themes are – Neurodevelopment, Disease Modification & Therapeutics, Mortality, Morbidity & Risk, Reproduction & Hormones, Capacity Building and Enabling Technologies. The creation of the themes were informed by the Top Ten priorities of the UK Epilepsy Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) and further scoped and developed by the #Every1EndingEpilepsy research strategy collaborative.

Each research programme will have a dedicated team of theme leads who will be supported by a task force of leading UK scientists and clinicians. Working together, the teams will drive a programme to secure large-scale research investment. This will feed into an overall roadmap for research into epilepsy and will be central to the work of the Institute.

Introducing the Enabling Technologies theme leads

Clinical Co-Lead: Professor Mark Richardson

Professor Mark Richardson is the Paul Getty III Professor of Epilepsy and Head of School of Neuroscience at King’s College London. Professor Richardson has been involved in epilepsy research for more than 25 years and is currently leading a data-driven research collaboration as part of the Epilepsy Research Institute and Angelini Pharma strategic alliance. The project is developing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to analyse and annotate large-scale NHS clinical data records. The technology will be used to understand and predict refractory epilepsy which could lead to novel treatments and prevention in the future.

Data Co-Lead: Professor John Terry

Professor John Terry is an Interdisciplinary Professorial Fellow at the University of Birmingham, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Neuronostics Ltd and Founding Director of the Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine. Supported by a prestigious EPSRC Established Career Fellowship, Professor Terry’s research transcends traditional discipline boundaries speaking to mathematics, computer science, biology and medicine. Professor Terry’s work has helped us understand how seizures emerge from large-scale brain networks and pioneered applications of mathematical models in the context of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.

Early Career Co-Lead: Dr Richard Rosch

Dr Richard Rosch is a clinical lecturer in Clinical Neurophysiology at King’s College London with expertise spanning neuroscience, paediatric epilepsy, and clinical neurophysiology. At the heart of Dr Rosch’s work is a fascination with patterns of brain waves in epilepsy and the complex brain networks that give rise to these phenomena. Dr Rosch leads an interdisciplinary research group, whose work ranges from imaging whole-brain activity in zebrafish with epileptic seizures, to applying artificial intelligence tools to brain recordings in patients undergoing epilepsy surgery.

Introducing our final Reproduction & Hormones theme lead

Clinical Co-Lead: Dr Janine Winterbottom

Dr Janine Winterbottom is an Advanced Nurse Specialist in epilepsy at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool. Her expertise focuses on risk communication and shared decision-making in preconception care and health for people with epilepsy. Dr Winterbottom is dedicated to raising awareness of the struggles across the reproductive life course for women and men living with epilepsy and how best to achieve reproductive health in research and intervention development. Dr Winterbottom is focused on driving research to improve our knowledge and understanding on hormones and their influence on the daily lives of people living with epilepsy.

Dr Janine Winterbottom will be joining basic science co-lead Dr Rebecca Bromley and early career co-lead Dr Faye McLeod in the Reproduction & Hormones programme, who are both looking forward to working with her.
