Epilepsy affects 633,000 people in the UK – that’s roughly 1 in every 100. Despite this, research into epilepsy has been chronically underfunded compared to other neurological conditions. There is an urgent need to invest in research in order to improve treatments and achieve a greater understanding of the condition’s underlying mechanisms, taking us closer to our vision of a life free from epilepsy. Despite advances in science, around 30% of those with the condition still do not respond to existing treatments and in 65% of people, the cause of their epilepsy remains unknown. In the UK alone, three people lose their lives to epilepsy every day.
