The inaugural Epilepsy Research Institute Conference took place during National Epilepsy Week 2025, bringing together leading researchers, clinicians, early-career scientists and those with lived experience of epilepsy for two days of groundbreaking discussions and collaboration.
Held in Manchester across 22-23 May, the conference showcased the Institute’s ambition to radically advance epilepsy research. From molecular neuroscience to global patient needs, the event reflected the urgent need for innovation in tackling one of the most common but under-researched and under-funded neurological conditions.
Day 1
The event opened with a welcome from Professor Matthew Walker, Chair of Trustees, and Rosemarie Pardington, Chief Executive, who outlined the Institute’s progress and vision. This was followed by a compelling keynote from Professor Ivan Soltesz (Stanford University), who shared cutting-edge insights into neuronal microcircuits, highlighting how advances in basic neuroscience are opening new pathways for monitoring and treating epilepsy.
The day’s programme included fascinating presentations and parallel sessions on the Institute’s strategic research themes: Neurodevelopment, Mortality, Morbidity & Risk, Advanced Therapeutics & Disease Modification, Reproduction & Hormones, Capacity Building and Enabling Technologies.
Professor Tony Marson later outlined the Institute’s research strategy and shared progress from the taskforce groups established to drive its delivery. This was followed by Professor Rhys Thomas unveiling the Tech 2030 vision – a bold roadmap to securing NHS investment in transformative epilepsy technologies.
On the evening of Day 1, delegates gathered for a celebratory dinner which included the announcement of the 2025 Research Awards, highlighting the pioneering new projects being supported in this year’s grant round. The event concluded with a special screening of short film Under the Lights, followed by a live Q&A with filmmaker Miles Levin, who lives with epilepsy. Miles’ personal and powerful narrative underscored the human dimension of the science discussed throughout a brilliant first day.
Day 2
The second day opened with the Early Career Researchers Breakfast Session, sponsored by the ILAE British Branch, showcasing emerging talent in genetics, neuroimaging and data science. Later, a standout session titled ‘The Power of Partnership’ featured members of the Institute’s Shape Network – Emma, Murray, and Kathryn – who highlighted the critical importance of involving people affected by epilepsy in shaping research priorities. Dr Claire Nolan (International Bureau for Epilepsy) then presented findings from the Global Epilepsy Needs Study, highlighting how patient voices from around the world are helping to shape international research priorities.
The second keynote was delivered by Laureate Professor Ingrid Scheffer (University of Melbourne), a global leader in epilepsy genetics. Her address explored how gene discovery has revolutionised our understanding of epilepsy syndromes and opened new therapeutic pathways.
Professor Helen Cross OBE, President of the Epilepsy Research Institute, brought Day 2 to a close, praising the spirit of collaboration and the calibre of innovation on display.
The conference concluded with a celebration of research excellence, recognising standout contributions across oral and poster presentations. Awards were given for innovation, clarity and impact – highlighting the talent driving epilepsy research forward.
