New partnership between Epilepsy Research Institute and MRC Centre of Research Excellence to drive forward device-based treatments

The Epilepsy Research Institute is proud to announce its partnership in a major new national initiative launched today by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence in Restorative Neural Dynamics will drive forward transformative device-based treatments for brain conditions including epilepsy.

By investigating ‘neural dynamics’*, the team will develop novel interventions and neurotechnology – ranging from brain implants to non-invasive and wearable devices – that could improve how the brain and body functions.

Professor Peter Magill, Director of the Centre from the University of Oxford, said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with the Epilepsy Research Institute as we seek to harness neural dynamics to revolutionise device-based therapies for epilepsy and other brain conditions.

“Our research approach is focused on patients. To make medical devices a part of every-day care for people with epilepsy, we need interventions and technologies that provide greater clinical benefits and are also accessible, scalable and cost-effective. We also know that one size will not fit all. Everyone’s lived experience with epilepsy conditions is different. So, it’s important that we tailor treatments to meet diverse requirements and priorities.

“The Epilepsy Research Institute brings a wealth of expertise and practical help for involving and engaging people in our research, helping to ensure it tackles the most important healthcare needs in the right ways to give greatest benefit.”

Rosemarie Pardington, Chief Executive of the Epilepsy Research Institute, said: “Our vision is to drive transformative progress in epilepsy research, advancing understanding, revolutionising treatment and achieving a future free from epilepsy. The landscape of epilepsy research is constantly evolving so it is vital we all work together to maximise our joint impact. Hence, we are absolutely delighted to be partnering with Professor Magill and his team on this exciting new chapter.

“We look forward to the discoveries ahead and to playing an active role in shaping a healthier future for all. This pioneering work to better understand ‘neural dynamics’, will unlock new possibilities in diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately, prevention.”

*Neural dynamics are the complex and changing patterns of activity across networks of nerve cells in the brain that underlie behaviour. The team will study how neural dynamics arise in health and are disturbed in brain conditions.
