Dr Amol Bhandare
To understand the function of non-neuronal brain cells called glia and how they impact the activity and function of neurons in health and disease, especially in epilepsy.
Dr Amol Bhandare is an Epilepsy Research Institute Emerging Leader Research Fellow at the University of Warwick. Dr Bhandare is specifically interested in understanding the role of microglia and astrocytes in epilepsy and how these cells either help to protect neurons in epilepsy or deteriorate neuronal function that might lead to drug-resistant seizures and other comorbidities, such as memory dysfunction and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Amol’s research extends to devising early diagnostic biomarkers to stratify people with epilepsy who are at risk of epilepsy related comorbidities and SUDEP.
