Professor Mark Richardson
To understand why an epileptic seizure starts at a particular moment, and to use this understanding to prevent seizures.
Professor Mark Richardson is Professor of Epilepsy and Head of the School of Neuroscience at King’s College London. Professor Richardson has been involved in epilepsy research for more than 25 years and his research focuses on a single question: why does an epileptic seizure start at a particular moment? In collaboration with mathematicians and engineers, his lab construct models of the human brain using a range of imaging and neurophysiological techniques. Using these techniques, he aims to understand the underlying mechanisms of seizure onset in people with epilepsy. In addition, he investigates the patterns of seizure occurrences, using wearable and implantable sensors, to develop methods to forecast future seizures. His research also examines health records, using ‘big data’ methods to identify ways to predict and understand resistance to antiseizure medication.
