A call is now open to expressions of interest from high calibre health professionals (including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals) who wish to undertake a PhD as a first step towards combining research with their developing clinical career. Salary costs are matched, and there is a focus on supporting those from non-traditional health research backgrounds. The PhD must be hosted at one of the following institutions: The University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, the University of Liverpool, Newcastle University and The University of Sheffield.

The Academy will support doctoral fellowships for health professionals from all disciplines who balance clinical work with an aspiration for developing a research career. This includes nurses, midwives and all categories of allied health professionals, including pharmacists and healthcare scientists, and all sub-specialties within medicine and surgery.”

The Forward North PhD Academy for Health Professionals is a partnership between the Universities of Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool and Sheffield to combine their strengths in biomedical and health research. With a £13m funding award from Wellcome, Forward North builds on 10 years of excellence in supporting the clinical academics of the future demonstrated by its predecessor, 4Ward North.
