Epilepsy affects one in 100 people in the UK. Three lives are lost every day, often suddenly and without warning. For too many, seizures can’t be controlled and causes remain unknown. Only research can change this. That’s why we're calling on MPs to become Parliamentary ‘Campaign Champions’ and help change the odds for the 633,000 people in the UK living with epilepsy.

I’m writing as your constituent to ask you to stand with the 633,000 people in the UK living with epilepsy by joining the Epilepsy Research Institute’s One in 100 campaign as a Parliamentary Campaign Champion.

You will be joining 20+ cross-party MPs who have already stepped up. However, to make lasting change, we need more voices in Parliament standing up for the thousands affected by epilepsy in the UK — directly and indirectly.

Epilepsy affects one in 100 people in the UK, with three lives lost to epilepsy-related causes every day – many sudden and unexplained. One in three people still live with seizures that can’t be controlled, and for 50% of those living with epilepsy, the cause is unknown. Research is the only way to change this.

Despite its significant impact, including a £2billion annual cost to the NHS, research into the condition receives just 7% of Government neurological research funding. This lack of research funding has real consequences:

- Promising clinical trials are delayed or never launched 
- Families are left without answers, support, or effective treatment 
- Opportunities to prevent epilepsy or reduce its impact are missed 
- Lives are lost — needlessly

This can change. The UK has the scientific expertise to lead the way in epilepsy research. What’s needed now is greater parliamentary support to invest in solutions — and help change the outlook for those living with the fear and uncertainty epilepsy brings.

As a Campaign Champion, you’ll receive support to raise epilepsy in debates, questions or letters, briefing materials and social media content, as well as direct access to the Epilepsy Research Institute’s team to help with any queries from constituents.
