Alison Cooper joined the Institute as Director of Governance in September 2021. She holds a degree in Sociology and Social Research and a Master’s degree in Public Health.
Alison began her career in academic general practice, contributing to research focused on clinical audit and quality assurance. She subsequently spent many years working in research management and support across the NHS, gaining extensive experience within primary care, community, mental health and acute healthcare settings in both Leicestershire and Hampshire.
In 2013, Alison moved into the charitable sector, where she served as Head of Research at the Tuberous Sclerosis Association for five years before working as an independent consultant. During this time, she also supported organisations including the British Branch of the International League Against Epilepsy.
With over a decade of experience as a member of charity senior leadership teams, Alison brings a wealth of expertise in governance, research management, regulatory compliance, fundraising and event management.
As Director of Governance, Alison is responsible for ensuring the Institute’s governance framework remains effective, robust and fit for purpose. Her role encompasses oversight of the Board of Trustees, committees and membership governance, as well as regulatory compliance, policy management and organisational assurance. Alison also serves as the Institute’s Company Secretary.
