The Epilepsy Research Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Finbar O’Callaghan as its new Chief Scientific Officer.
Professor O’Callaghan joins the Institute with an exceptional track record in paediatric neuroscience and clinical research. A recognised leader in the epilepsy community, he is Professor of Paediatric Neuroscience at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and an honorary Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He will take up his role with the Institute in November.
Over his distinguished career, Professor O’Callaghan has led pioneering research to improve the understanding and treatment of complex epilepsies, with a particular focus on tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a common comorbidity. His work has spanned clinical trials, neuroepidemiology, and international collaborations including leadership of major studies on childhood epilepsy, cannabis-based medicines and metformin in refractory seizures.
He has previously served as President of the British Paediatric Neurology Association (BPNA) and Secretary of the European Paediatric Neurology Association (EPNS), reflecting his influence in shaping paediatric neurology research and practice across the UK and Europe.
